News: Incoming financial results to define the market's tone

Feb 21, 2012 - PropertyGuru.com.my

Incoming financial results from firms may set the tone for Bursa Malaysia, with investors awaiting fresh leads that may get mild gains for the index in the near term.

Property heavyweights like CIMB Group Holdings Bhd, Malayan Banking Bhd, Genting Group and Sime Darby Bhd are expected to reveal quarterly results soon, and a generally unexciting quarter with no big negatives and an upside bias is expected by fund managers and analysts.

Chan Ken Yew, Head of Research at Kenanga Investment Bank, said the result season will not unveil negative surprises but event-driven developments that will drive stock prices in the near term. Strong sectors will likely be construction, fast-moving consumers goods, oil and gas and companies engaged in the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).

According to Pong Teng Siew, Head at Jupiter Securities Sdn Bhd, some large capitalised companies might or might not excel amidst a generally good results season.

"It is still a mixed bag of marbles, plantation stocks are expected to be good, buoyed by optimal weather and the traditional peak harvest season, while companies in the oil and gas sector are boosted by the domestically-driven projects and global high oil prices," he said.

Meanwhile, an analyst from a foreign research house noted that the property and construction sector may benefit from the My Rapid Transit project, among other key projects.

"The results are expected to be within expectations, numbers would tend to be unassuming as there were no unsuspecting black swans that happened during the last quarter," said the analyst.
